For Freedoms: Where Do We Go From Here

June 4, New York, NY | Monacelli and For Freedoms announce the organization’s first ever monograph
ahead of the 2024 election. Founded in 2016 by Hank Willis Thomas, Eric Gottesman, Wyatt Gallery, and
Michelle Woo, For Freedoms is an artist-led organization that centers art as a catalyst for creative civic
engagement, discourse and direct action and that aims to infuse an anti-partisan, arts-based perspective
into the political landscape. What began in advance of the 2016 federal elections, has evolved into an
ongoing movement and a creative collaboration of epic proportion. Working in partnership with
thousands of artists, activists, institutions, organizations, and scholars for nearly a decade, For Freedoms
has created public art installations, billboard campaigns, exhibitions, artist-led town halls, and arts-based
programs across all 50 states and U.S. territories.
Publishing in the lead up to the 2024 presidential election, For Freedoms: Where Do We Go From Here?
is the first comprehensive volume to celebrate more than 550 artist billboards created between 2016-2023. By appropriating an advertising medium normally used for political campaigning during
election seasons, For Freedoms continues a long tradition of artists re-imagining billboards as a space for
nuanced inquiry about advertising, popular culture, and American life. These billboards emphasize the
For Freedoms mission to model how art can urge communities into greater participation and action,
foster nuanced discourse, and they demonstrate how the organization has transformed public
commercial space into a showcase for visual art on a large-scale.
